2018 Shiraz Viognier

Shiraz Viognier 2018

The winter and early spring of 2017 were significantly dryer than average. October and November saw useful rainfall.

120mm rain in the first week of December put pressure on fruit set but set up the summer growth and berry development brilliantly.

An aggressive hailstorm on January 9, prior to veraison, damaged berries in several vineyards. At Clonakilla we recorded approximately 15% damage, averaged out across all blocks.

70 mm of rain in twenty-four hours on February 25 and 26, just as we were entering the final ripening phase. Mercifully, no berry split. Two cold, 40km/ hour wind days followed, drying the bunches.

A perfectly warm autumn pattern kicked in. Harvest baumes of 13.2 to 14.3

Some argue this is Australia's greatest red wine, it is certainly one of the greatest Shirazs
